As a young college student, Matt became fascinated with the subject of wine, how it participated in communication, played an integral part in a great meal, and authored its role in our world history. Matt grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a place much more widely known for their cheap beer and neon colored cheese.  Ultimately, the fascination with wine took him west and led to a career in viticulture, wine production and winery management.

While Matt’s experience was paved with many roads working for and learning from several of California’s legendary producers (Bruce Neyers, Ehren Jordan, Lee Hudson), he became most fulfilled after spending three integral years farming Failla’s remote vineyard on the Sonoma Coast.  It was during that period he witnessed the power of the seasons and connected with the rhythm and (often unpredictable) pace of nature.  Viticulture gained his full respect and winemaking, became a stewardship, a reflection of season and place.  That conviction is deeply rooted in Matt’s personal constitution and serves as a guide for the wines he now makes.

In 2016 Matt bought a remote 40 acre parcel and winery in California’s Sierra Foothills that he is currently developing and serves as the home ranch for his label, Newfound Wines.  In addition, Matt serves on the Board of Directors for Pahlmeyer Wines and Wayfayer Wines.  He also manages the farming operation at the Scaggs Vineyard on Mt. Veeder.
